Pet Friendly Beaches in North Carolina

Long Beach, Oak Island

Long Beach is located about 30 minutes south of Wilmington. You and your pet can drive there as there’s a bridge connecting the island to the city. There are a number of pet friendly beaches on the island that welcome leashed pets throughout the year. One of those beaches is Long Beach. Like the name suggests, there’s a stretch of long sandy beach that goes on for miles. There’s a pier at this beach. Watching a sunset from the beach as the sun descends slowly behind the pier can be a pretty magical experience. Along with swimming, you and your pupper can also go boating at this place.

Freeman Park, Carolina Beach

Freeman Park is loved by locals and travelers alike. Not just because it has stunning landscapes, but also because it offers countless exciting activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, camping, crabbing and horseback riding. The place has a rich flora and fauna as it is home to a number of species that is indigenous to the region. Freeman Park is a dog friendly beach. However, dogs have to be on a leash while exploring the beach. Also, they are allowed to visit the beach from April 1st to September 30th when the horses for horseback riding are not there. Portable restrooms are available for humans only. So, you would need to carry waste disposal bags to clean up any mess if your doggo needs to poop while at the beach. You would also need to fill up any hole in the sand if your pupper decides to dig one.

Kitty Hawk Beaches, Kitty Hawk

Most public beaches in Kitty Hawk are beaches that allow dogs to visit along with their pawrents. However, only the most well behaved and well trained puppers may go off leash. If your little darling tends to ignore your voice commands, then it is best to keep him/her restrained with a leash while walking on this beach. You would also need to carry waste disposal bags and clean up after your doggo in case s/he makes a mess at the beach. These rules are very basic and does not really come in the way of having great fun. There are tons of exciting adventure options at these beaches. Swimming, surfing, fishing and kayaking— do anything and everything you’ve been waiting for.

Topsail Beach Off Leash Dog Beach, Topsail Beach

Topsail Beach Off Leash Dog Beach is perhaps the only beach on the island where dogs are allowed to go off leash. However, if you’re thinking about taking a dog to the beach between May 15th and September 30th, then do keep in mind that during this time, according to the rules of the beach, dogs need to be on a leash that is 20 feet or less in length. They are allowed to go off leash between the months of October and mid- May. It is a clean and beautiful beach, and you’re expected to keep it that way. You would need to clean up after your furbabies if they pollute the beach in any way (pooping etc.). These are simple rules to follow. Topsail Beach Off Leash Dog Beach is a great place for dogs and pawrents as there is plenty of open space for your little darling to run around and explore. S/he can even go swimming with you if they love playing in the water.
