Most airlines accept pets weighing 20 lbs or less in the cabin and no more than 100 lbs in the cargo hold. Larger dogs that do not meet the requirement of the cabin will be transported in the cargo hold. Before booking your flights with a pet, it is always advised to check any seasonal restrictions the airline may have.

United Airlines Pet Policy

United Airlines is taking drastic steps in partnership with American Humane to improve the quality, safety and experience of air transportation for pets and pet parents. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s). United Airlines accepts only two pets per flight, so confirming availability is the first step of many, as are explained further.

Pet Criteria

Cats, dogs, rabbits and household birds are permitted to travel accompanied in the aircraft’s cabin. Puppies and kittens under the age of 4 months will not be allowed to travel with the airlines.

In-cabin

A pet traveling in cabin is required to be carried in an airline approved kennel, either hard sided or soft sided. Hard sided kennels can be as big as 17.5 inches long x 12 inches wide x 7.5 inches high (44 cm x 30 cm x 19 cm). Maximum dimensions for soft sided kennels on the other hand are 18 inches long x 11 inches wide x 11 inches high (46 cm x 28 cm x 28 cm). Only one pet per kennel will be allowed and the space within should be enough for the pet to turn around and stand comfortably.

In-cargo

PetSafe is United’s very own animal transport program designed for safe shipping of pets who are not eligible for in-cabin travel. They ensure that the pets are comfortable by transporting them in a climate controlled, pressurised compartment. Pets anywhere from 2lbs (1 kg) to 770 lbs (350 kg) can travel safely with PetSafe. The carrier criteria for PetSafe is that it should be big enough for the pet to move about freely and sit and stand with ease.

Emotional Support/Service Animal

Trained service animals and Emotional support/psychiatric animals will be permitted to travel with individuals with disabilities provided the animal is a cat/dog/miniature horse, weighs no more than 65 pounds and is older than a minimum of four months. United does require a few documents to be submitted -

  • Licensed medical/mental health professional form
  • Passenger Confirmation of Liability and Emotional Support/Psychiatric Service Animal Behavior
  • Veterinary health form completed by a licensed veterinarian.
