Most airlines accept pets weighing 20 lbs or less in the cabin and no more than 100 lbs in the cargo hold. Larger dogs that do not meet the requirement of the cabin will be transported in the cargo hold. South African Airways Pet Policy

Passengers planning to travel with their pet(s) must inform the airline in advance and make the necessary booking as required. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s).

Pet Criteria

Pets such as dogs and cats are welcome onboard.

In-cabin

At present, South African Airways does not allow pet(s) to travel in the cabin.

Checked Baggage

Animals are accepted as checked baggage in the selected aircraft of South African Airways. The pet must at all times remain inside the carrier, the dimensions of which must not exceed 80 inches. Also, the weight of the pet and the carrier combined should be within 70 lbs.

In-cargo

Pets that do not meet the requirement of checked baggage are transported via the cargo services of the airline.

Emotional Support/Service Animal

Passengers flying to and from United States are allowed to bring an emotional support and service dog in the cabin of the aircraft for free.
