The decision to travel with a pet should be communicated to the airline as it is subject to availability. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s).
Cats, dogs, rabbits and hares are welcome onboard. Also, a passenger can only bring two pets when flying with Lufthansa Airlines.
Small dogs and cats are accepted in the cabin of the aircraft. The pet must always remain inside a soft sided carrier during the entire flight’s duration. The combined weight of the pet and the carrier cannot exceed 18 lbs. Also, the carrier should be leak proof, large enough for the comfort of the pet and must be within the restricted dimension criteria of 47 inches.
Large cats and dogs as well as rabbits and hares that do not meet the requirements of the cabin as stated by the airline are transported as checked baggage. The carrier in which the pet will be kept must be secured and leak proof. The airline suggests two types of carriers - medium sized carrier with the dimensions restriction of 24 x 18 x 16 inches and large carriers sized 49 x 29 x 33 inches. Also, the combined weight of the pet and the carrier should be within 18 lbs.
Large animals that do not meet the requirement of the checked baggage and are required to travel unaccompanied will be transported via the cargo services of the airline.
Passengers are allowed to bring along their emotional support and service animal. While service animals are accepted on all of the airline’s flights, emotional support animals are only welcome on the flights flying to and from United States. However, for both of these animals, the passenger must fill the required forms as provided by the airline. The forms are:
