Most airlines accept pets weighing 20 lbs or less in the cabin and no more than 100 lbs in the cargo hold. Larger dogs that do not meet the requirement of the cabin will be transported in the cargo hold. Before booking your flights with a pet, it is always advised to check any seasonal restrictions the airline may have.

Delta Airlines Pet Policy

Delta Airlines accepts pet for travel on first come first serve basis. Due to capacity limitation, the airline allows only 2 pets each in the First and Business Class, and 4 pets in the main cabin. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s).

Pet Criteria

Small animals such as dogs, cats and household birds at least 15 weeks old are allowed to travel in the cabin.

In-cabin

With respect to cabin travel, Delta Airlines allows a passenger to bring one pet in each carrier. If a female dog or cat is flying across the domestic borders in the USA, then her litter, age 10 weeks or 6 months, can travel in the same carrier as their mother. There is no limitation on the number of animals comprising a litter. With respect to the carrier in which the pet will be placed, it can either be hard-sided or soft sided and must not exceed the dimensions limit of 21 x 15 x 16 inches.

In-cargo

Animals that cannot fit in the cabin, given their large size, or required to be transported without their owner, are shipped through Delta Cargo. A health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian is required to process the request of a pet being shipped as cargo. The carrier dimensions as laid down by the airline are 27 x 20 x 19 inches, 32 x 22 x 23 inches, 36 x 24 x 26 inches, 40 x 27 x 30 inches and 48 x 32 x 35 inches and any one can be chosen basis the comfort of the pet. The carrier should be large enough for the pet to stand, sit or turn around with ease and must be secured with a solid top, door, and nuts and bolts. It should also be properly ventilated.

Emotional Support/Service Animal

Delta Airlines allows passengers to bring one emotional support and service animal not less than 4 months old. Certain documentation as required by the airline must be provided by the passenger to ensure a smooth travel. The documents include:

  • Animal’s Veterinary Health Form and/or an immunization record or other proof of current vaccination.
  • Certificate from a certified mental health professional
  • Signed certification of training
