Most airlines accept pets weighing 20 lbs or less in the cabin and no more than 100 lbs in the cargo hold. Larger dogs that do not meet the requirement of the cabin will be transported in the cargo hold. Before booking your flights with a pet, it is always advised to check any seasonal restrictions the airline may have.

Avianca Airways Pet Policy

Avianca Airways allows pets in the cabin and as checked baggage. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s). The number of pets permitted on each flight is limited, so confirming the availability is the first step of many, as explained further.

Pet Criteria

Avianca allows cats and dogs to travel in the cabin. If traveling within Colombia, ornamental birds can also travel in the cabin. Roosters can travel in the hold. The pets must be a minimum of 8 weeks old to qualify for travel with Avianca.

In-cabin

Only 1 carrier per passenger is allowed in the cabin. Pets traveling in-cabin must weigh less than 18 lbs (8 kg). This limitation does not include the carrier’s weight. The pets have to stay inside the carrier for the duration of the journey. The carrier dimensions must be well ventilated and smaller than 16" x 12" x 8" (41 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm). It should be made of waterproof fabric. The height of the pet should be shorter than 8" H (20 cm).

Checked Baggage

Pets who weigh more than the limitations of in-cabin travel can be transported through hold. Animals have to weigh a minimum of 22 lbs (10 kg) and a maximum of 44 lbs (20 kg) excluding their carriers. Airbus A330 and Boeing B787 aircraft have a restriction of a combined weight (pet plus the carrier) of up to 101 lbs (46 kg). Carriers going as checked baggage need to be made with sturdy materials like fiberglass, metal or plastic. It should not weigh more than 22 lbs (10 kg) and should not restrict your animals movement. Carriers should be clean and should have proper ventilation and leak proof bedding along with food and water containers easily accessible from outside.

Emotional Support/Service Animal

Service and Support dogs can travel for free. Service dogs will need to have identifiable credentials like tags, harness or ID cards. To travel with an Emotional Support Animal, a certificate of mental health condition issued by a licensed practitioner is mandatory. The dog can travel with you in the cabin without a carrier/bag and must remain with you throughout the journey. This service is not subject to availability of space.
