Most airlines accept pets weighing 20 lbs or less in the cabin and no more than 100 lbs in the cargo hold. Larger dogs that do not meet the requirement of the cabin will be transported in the cargo hold. Before booking your flights with a pet, it is always advised to check any seasonal restrictions the airline may have.

Austrian Airlines Pet Policy

Austrian Airlines, the flag carrier of Austria, allows pets to be transported in the cabin as well as in the cargo hold of their aircraft. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s).

Pet Criteria

The pet needs to be at least 12 weeks old for them to travel in an Austrian Airlines flight and at least 16 weeks old if traveling to or from the U.S.A.

In-cabin

Only small cats and dogs are allowed to be transported in the cabin of an aircraft. The pet must be carried in a pet carrier or some sort of container that adheres to the regulations of the airline. The combined weight of the pet along with its carrier should not exceed the weight limit of 18 lb. It should also not exceed the linear dimensions of 46 inches. An extra fee would be levied on pets traveling in-cabin with their owners.

Checked Baggage

Animals that cannot be transported in the cabin of an aircraft may be allowed to travel in the cargo hold section of the aircraft as checked baggage. A maximum of two pets are allowed to be transported in a single container or pet-carrier, provided that they are used to co-habiting with each other. The weight of each of the pets cannot be more than 31 lb. The pet carrier needs to be leak proof and have ventilation on at least three sides. Some added rules and regulations might apply to brachycephalic dog breeds and breeds that are considered to be temperamental. An extra fee would be charged on pets that are being transported in the cargo hold as checked baggage.

Emotional Support/Service Animal

Guide dogs, emotional support dogs and other service animals (seizure alert dogs) are allowed to travel with his/her owner in the cabin free of cost, as long as all the safety requirements are met.
