Space in cabin or cargo for pets flying with Alaska Airlines is subject to availability, therefore booking in advance is highly recommended. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s).
Dogs, cats, rabbits and household birds are allowed by Alaska Airlines to travel in cabin with the passenger. However, the airline ascertains that dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks old and completely weaned.
A maximum of two pet carriers per passenger are allowed in the cabin, provided that the passenger pays for the adjacent seat as well. If the breed of the two pets is same, they can be kept together in one carrier as long as it causes them no discomfort. When traveling in cabin, Alaska Airlines recommends either a hard-sided carrier or a soft-sided carrier for the pet. While the dimensions of the hard-sided carrier must not exceed 17 x 11 x 7.5 inches, the soft-sided carrier should be within 17 x 11 x 9.5 inches in dimensions. No matter the choice of carrier, it should be leak proof, adequately ventilated, and lined with absorbent bedding. Also, the weight of the pet and the carrier combined must not be more than 20 lbs.
Almost all domesticated pets - cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, household birds, non-poisonous reptiles, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits, and tropical fish- are welcome to travel in the cargo. Permission to travel in the cargo is granted by the airline if the pet is harmless, inoffensive and requires no added attention during the transit period. To ensure a no hassle flying experience, the pet is required to be placed in a solid carrier that has a sturdy roof, is properly ventilated and intact with handles. The dimensions of the carrier as per the airline’s regulation must not exceed 30 x 27 x 40 inches. Passengers should also keep in mind that the combined weight of the pet and carrier does not exceed 150 lbs.
Emotional support and service animals such as cats, dogs and miniature horses are permitted to travel for free in the cabin with the passenger. However, at all times, an emotional support and service animal must be on leash, or in an approved carrier that fits under the seat. Certain documentations are required for an emotional support and service animal to fly with Alaska Airlines and the passenger must present it to the airline before boarding. The documents include:
