Most airlines accept pets weighing 20 lbs or less in the cabin and no more than 100 lbs in the cargo hold. Larger dogs that do not meet the requirement of the cabin will be transported in the cargo hold. Before booking your flights with a pet, it is always advised to check any seasonal restrictions the airline may have.

Air New Zealand Pet Policy

Air New Zealand only accepts a limited number of animals onboard due to space restrictions. Therefore, bookings must be made accordingly. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s).

Pet Criteria

Air New Zealand permits cats, dogs, and small caged birds no less than 16 weeks in age to travel as pet passengers.


At present, Air New Zealand does not permit pets to travel in the cabin of the aircraft.


On international routes, Air New Zealand transports animals via its cargo service. To be able to smoothly process the cargo boarding, you are required to check-in early with your pet. Documents such as your pet’s health certificates, vaccinations record and other essential travel paperwork should be in place before the scheduled departure.

Emotional Support/Service Animal

Air New Zealand welcomes emotional support and service animal in the cabin at no extra charge. The documents ascertaining the requirement of the emotional support and service animal must be provided to the airline. Documents include:

  • In case of an emotional support animal, a letter issued by the certified mental practitioner stating that the passenger is under his/her care and has been diagnosed with the mental disability as recognized in the DSM-IV and is in need of an emotional support animal for the flight
  • In case of a service animal, a letter issued by a licensed service animal institution that the animal is trained to assist a person with disability
