Air India, the flag carrier of India, allows pets to be transported in the cabin, as checked baggage and as cargo. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s).
A maximum of 2 pets per flight are allowed. Dogs, cats, household birds and other pets are allowed to travel on international flights as long as they have all the necessary documents such as health certificates, vaccination records, entry permits for destination countries etc.
Small pets are allowed to be transported in the cabin. The combined weight of the pet and his/her carrier should not be more than 11 lb. A fee would be charged for the same which can be between $100-200. The dog needs to be kept properly muzzled and leashed at all times.
Pets that are deemed too big to be taken along in the cabin can be transported as checked baggage.
Pets can be shipped as cargo as long as all the rules and regulations of transporting pets as cargo are being adhered to.
Service animals such as a guide dog for the deaf or a seeing-eye dog for the blind are allowed to travel in the cabin along with their owners free of charge. Passengers would need to keep their service dogs muzzled and leashed at all times. These animals would not be allowed to occupy a passenger seat while traveling in the cabin of an aircraft. Please be informed that only 1 service dog is allowed to be transported in each flight. Hence, it is advisable that you make arrangements for your service animal’s travel the moment you book your flight tickets.
