Air France, the French flag carrier airline allows pets to travel in the cabin, in hold and as checked baggage. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s). Depending on the flight, the capacity for pets may vary, so confirming the availability is the first step of many, as explained further.
Air France accepts cats and dogs on their flights. Pets must be at least 10 weeks old to be accepted for travel by the airline.
Only 1 pet per passenger will be permitted in the cabin. The combined weight of the pet and the carrier must be less than 17 lbs (8 kg) to be eligible for in-cabin travel. Dogs and cats need to travel in a special closed travel bag, the dimensions of which cannot be more than 18" x 11" x 9" (46 cm x 28 cm x 24 cm). The bag should fit under the seat in front of you and the pet should be inside the bag throughout the journey. For this reason, the bag should be properly ventilated and big enough for the pet to sit, stand and move around comfortably.
Pets weighing between 17-165 lbs (8-75 kg) will be transported as checked baggage. A maximum of 3 animals per passenger can be transported per flight. The carriers that go as checked baggage must be sized according to the pet and must have enough space for the pet sit, stand, and turn around comfortably with at least 2" (5 cm) space above their head. The carriers should be made of hard plastic or fiberglass, with no wheels and must compulsorily have food and water dishes inside.
Pets that exceed the weight limitations of checked baggage i.e they weigh more than 165 lbs (75 kg) will be transported in the cargo hold. The carrier requirements that apply on freight are the same as that of checked baggage.
Service dogs can travel in-cabin at no extra cost as long as the customer can provide credible proof of the animals training and of the individual’s need. The dog must be leashed at all times and must not obstruct the aisles and the emergency exits. Emotional Support/Psychiatric Animals can travel with the passenger in-cabin free of charge to /fro the USA. The airline will provide an “Application to travel with an emotional support dog/psychiatric service dog in the cabin” which needs to be filled and submitted at least 48 hours prior, along with the animal’s passport and an official signed letter from a mental health professional stating the disability and the need of the animal. A mandatory visual verification will take place at the airport, only post that the animal’s transportation will be confirmed.
