Aeroflot Russian Airlines Pet Policy

Aeroflot is the largest Russian Airline and welcomes pets in the cabin, as checked baggage and cargo on most of their flights. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s). Aeroflot requires a notice about the traveling pets at least 36 hours prior to the flight. And even then the capacity for pets is limited, so confirming the availability is the first step of many, as explained further.

Pet Criteria

Aeroflot only accepts small tamed pets like dogs, cats and birds. Other animals will only be accepted if they are tamed as well. Restrictions on the breeds may apply.

In-cabin

Small cats, dogs and domesticated birds can travel in-cabin as long as the total weight of the pet and the carrier does not exceed the maximum limit of 17 lbs (8 kg). Only 1 carrier is allowed per passenger. They can however, carry several pets of the same species in the same carrier if their total weight does not go beyond the maximum. In- cabin carrier dimensions must not exceed 49" (125 cm) in the case of hard sided carriers, and 53" (135 cm) in case of soft sided carriers. The carrier should also be spacious for the pet(s) to comfortably move around. It also needs to be well ventilated and should have a solid, waterproof and absorbent bottom.

Checked Baggage

Pets and carriers that exceed the weight limitations of in-cabin transportation but weigh less than 110 lbs (50 kg) can travel as checked baggage. There are no dimension restrictions for the carriers that go as checked baggage but they do need to be well ventilated and have a solid, waterproof and absorbent bottom. They need to necessarily be rigid, shock resistant and big enough for the pet to move around naturally.

In-cargo

Pets that exceed the maximum weight limitations as required to travel with checked baggage and the pets who are traveling unaccompanied can be transported with Aeroflot Cargo. The carrier requirements for hold are the same as that of checked baggage.

Emotional Support/Service Animal

Only dogs are accepted under the airline’s Service/Emotional Support Animal policy. They can travel free of charge only on flights to or from the USA. On all other flights the special baggage charge will be levied as applied on the carriage of domestic animals. After a verification of the need of the passenger and of the proof of training of the service dog, the animal will be permitted to travel in the cabin with a collar/leash/muzzle and an identification mark saying “Service Animal”. As for Emotional Support Animals, they are required to be transported in a carrier as opposed to Service Animals who can travel without a carrier. They can travel in-cabin if the combined weight of the dog and the carrier is under 17lbs (8 kg) otherwise they will be transported in the baggage hold. A letter from a psychiatrist or psychotherapist stating the need of the individual to travel with a support animal for therapeutic purposes is a must. The airline has all the rights to verify the authenticity of the documents submitted.
