Southwest Airlines happily allows pets to travel accompanied in the cabin on their domestic flights. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s). Southwest Airlines has a capacity of up to 6 pets per flight, so confirming the availability is the first step of many, as explained further.
Only cats and dogs are accepted under Southwest’s pet travel policy.
Every passenger is permitted 1 pet carrier, inside which up to 2 pets of the same species can be accommodated. You can choose from either a soft sided or a hard sided carrier, not bigger than 18.5" x 8.5" x 13.5" (47 cm x 22 cm x 34 cm). It should also be ensured that the carrier is leak proof and well ventilated. It should be small enough to fit under the flight seat but big enough for the pets to move, sit and stand without difficulty.
No provisions have been made for pet travel as checked baggage or in hold in Southwest Airlines because of the extreme temperature changes within the cargo area.
Southwest Airlines accepts only cats and dogs as Emotional Support/Service Animals. This allowance is subject to adherence to the safety and documentation requirements as stated by the airline. One must also note that other area specific governmental laws and regulations enforced in the destination country may also apply. This includes health certificate, vaccination requirements and permits needed in the state/country the animal is being transported to.
