Most airlines accept pets weighing 20 lbs or less in the cabin and no more than 100 lbs in the cargo hold. Larger dogs that do not meet the requirement of the cabin will be transported in the cargo hold. Before booking your flights with a pet, it is always advised to check any seasonal restrictions the airline may have.

American Airlines Pet Policy

American Airlines allows 7 kennels on American flights, excluding service animals. It is of prime importance to be aware of the airlines’ specific pet policies to understand the requirements and prepare for a safe and comfortable journey for your pet(s).

Pet Criteria

American Airlines permits small pets such as dogs and cats, at least 8 weeks old, to travel in the cabin.

In-cabin

Passengers need to pay for the carry-on pet charge as levied by the airline. To ensure a comfortable pet flight journey, a soft sided carrier that is water proof, nylon padded, and ventilated from at least two sides is recommended. Also, the carrier should not restrict movement of the pet; s/he must be able to stand up, turn around and sit with ease. To ensure that, a non collapsible carrier measuring not more than 19 x 13 x 9 inches in dimensions is required. The combined weight of the pet and carrier should not exceed 20 lbs.

Checked Baggage

With American Airlines, up to two pets are allowed to travel as checked baggage if they meet the minimum age and health requirements of the travel destination. Also, pets are accepted on first come first serve basis. The carrier in which the pet is to be placed should be large enough and must be made up of wood, metal or plastic. The dimensions of the carrier should not exceed 40 x 27 x 30 inches and the weight of the pet and carrier combined must be within 100 lbs.

Emotional Support/Service Animal

Passengers flying with American Airlines are allowed to bring one emotional support and service animal that includes cats and dogs and in some approved cases, a trained miniature horse. To receive an approval for flying with an emotional support/service animal, complete documentation is required by the airline such as:

  • Medical / Mental Health Professional Form
  • Veterinary Health Form, or vaccination record with current rabies vaccination information
  • Confirmation of Animal Behavior Form
